Daeun and Seun, the Ten-Year Currents and the Yearly Weather
Published: 2026-04-30 ยท Updated: 2026-06-10

Anyone who has spent time around Saju has heard phrases like "the natal chart is good, but the Daeun hasn't arrived yet" or "a strong Seun comes in this year." The natal chart, the Daeun, and the Seun form the three layers of Saju's time axis.

The Natal Chart: Eight Characters You Were Born With

The natal chart (Wonguk, ๅŽŸๅฑ€) is the set of eight characters fixed at the moment of birth โ€” the Saju chart itself. It never changes, and it shows the "default settings" of a person's temperament and tendencies. A common analogy compares the natal chart to a car: some people are born sports cars, others SUVs.

Daeun: Seasons in Ten-Year Units

The Daeun (ๅคง้‹) is the large current that shifts every ten years. It is derived from the month pillar, running forward or backward depending on the chart, and its starting age differs from person to person. Continuing the analogy, the Daeun is the road environment. Just as the same car feels different on a highway versus a dirt track, the same natal chart expresses itself differently depending on which Daeun it is passing through.

What matters in a Daeun is not a good/bad binary but the question, "which element's energy flows in during this stretch?" For someone whose natal chart lacks Fire, a Fire Daeun is read as a period when the missing energy of expression and expansion gets replenished.

Seun: The Weather of Each Year

The Seun (ๆญฒ้‹) is the stem-branch pair of each calendar year โ€” every year brings in a new combination that interacts with the natal chart and the current Daeun. If the Daeun is the road, the Seun is the day's weather. Driving the same highway differs on a clear day versus in a downpour; the Seun shows the short-term rhythm of a single year.

New Year fortune readings belong to Seun interpretation. Slice the time finer and you get monthly luck (Wolun) and daily luck (Ilun) โ€” the "today's flow" feature in Hamhee K-SAJU sits on this same structure.

Cautions When Reading the Three Layers Together

First, the deeper the layer, the heavier its influence. If the natal chart is your constitution, the Daeun is the season and the Seun is the weather. No amount of cloudy weather changes your constitution. A rough-looking year does not shake an entire life.

Second, be wary of the phrase "bad luck." Even traditional interpretation only says certain periods favor expansion while others favor consolidation and accumulation โ€” there is no period in which everything is blocked. The practical use of Saju is adjusting strategy to the grain of the time: in a year that favors defense, skip the aggressive expansion and build inner strength instead.

Third, fortune reading is a supplement to decision-making, never a substitute. For major decisions โ€” changing jobs, investing, marrying โ€” real-world conditions, professional advice, and your own judgment come first. Treat the Daeun and Seun as one additional lens for double-checking a decision, nothing more.
